Crew List

Music video production is not a one man job. It requires individuals with different skills to come together and work towards a common goal.
In this post I will be assigning the roles to each member of the monkeys group for the production of our final music video. Since our group consists of 4 member, the workload is divided between each for of us to make things easier and so that we remain focused on the role we have been assigned with

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scène is an expression used to describe the design aspect of a video production, which essentially means “visual theme” or “telling a story”—both in visually artful ways through storyboarding, cinematography and stage design, and in poetically artful ways through direction. There are some elements that make up the mise-en-scene. These include lighting, costuming, camera placement, camera angles, props etc.

Setting:

Setting is a very important element of “putting up the scene” – the setting of the scene and the objects visible. Our music video will be shot in different settings as it has many different scenes. For the shot including the performance of our artist, the setting we have chosen is a studio that belongs to my team members father, Daheem. Plain background setting will be put and the artist performance will take place in front of that. For the shot where a person will be shown indulging in their favourite dessert, we have decided to shoot it in a very cool and aesthetic cafe. Some of the scene will be shot indoors in a room. The shot including friends watching Netflix together will be shot in an indoor cosy setting. Children letting go off the helium baloons will be shot in an open ground. Below are some refrences that will give you guys an idea of what setting we really want our video to be shot at. The bus stop scene will be shot at a bus stop station. The shot of kids enjoying their joyride will be taken at an amusement park.

Lighting:

The intensity, direction and quality of lighting can influence an audiences understanding of characters, actions, themes and mood. Our music video will be shot both indoors and outdoors, in day light and indoor lighting set up. Since our music video is based on the idea of happiness, the lighting of it will be high-key, bright and energetic so as to radiate postive vibes out of the video. Light is the source of goodness and the ultimate reality. This will encourage an optimistic upbeat reaction and go best with the theme of the video. When you see a bright light, you feel extremely happy and positive in life. There’s absolutely nothing that you fear since a beautiful bright light always tries to bring positive energies to your side. In fact, all the positive energies are of bright white light.

Costume:

Costume refers to the clothes our characters will be wearing. Our music video will have clips from normal day routine and so the costumes of most of our characters will be kept casual and simple. The costume of our artist will be very funky and colourful. The different colors in the artists jacket represents different emotions and feelings giving out a care-free and positive vibe. We will make our character wear a jacket and pants beneath with sneakers. The jacket will have patched of different colour so that it stands out against the plain background. The whole look, combined with the hairstyle and sunglasses, is meant to potray cool, cheerful and easy-going attitude.
The shot which includes a guy sitting at the bus stop, our character will be wearing a plain black suit to make it look professional. Other characters will be wearing simple normal day clothes to show them finding happiness in state they are normally in.

Makeup and Hairstyles:

The hairstyle of our artist will be spikes or gelled hair to match the vibe of his costume. Other characters will have normal hairstyle and very elegant and subtle make up look to those who need it.

Props:

There are many props that we will be needing. We will need a
boquet of roses
,a broom stick, a DJ board, an aesthetic looking dessert,
colour powder:
for colour fight, popcorn basket, cute socks etc.

Mood Board

A mood board is a type of collage consisting of images, text, and samples of objects in a composition. We were inspired by many things that we wanted our music video to have in it, had many references in our mind and were even inspired by the concept of some songs and movies. To have a clearer picture in mind, Fatima made a mood board consisting of some images along with quotes and text that are linked to our music video idea and concept. I have inserted it below and if you want to take a look at the enlarged version of it, click on the image and it will take you guys to the website where she made it.

Treatment

Treatment is a more detailed version of the synopsis. It includes every singly detail for example the shots, camera angles, type of editing, sounds etc.
The song that we have chosen is Udd Gaye and its time duration is three minutes and one second. Since we need to extend the duration of the song, my crew and I have decided to add a prelude to the music video, showing a narrative with no music in the background. The prelude will approximately be of three minutes and fifty seconds.
The music video will start with an extreme long shot of the birds flying and another shot showing sunrise, indicating the start of the day. The shot of birds flying will be taken against the light so as to focus more on the sunlight than the birds flying.

Picture

A shot of birds flying against sunlight
Diagetic sounds of birds chirping will be added to the silent background. The next shot will show a girl waking up and doing a stretch, facial expression showing reluctance to wake up. The previous shot will then be cut and take you to a scene showing the road cleaner cleaning the road pavement with a broom stick. A wide shot of a guy sitting at a bus stop will be shown, waiting for the bus. The diagetic sounds of car honking can be heard. The shot is then changed to a full shot of the guy.

Picture

A bird poop falls on his shoulder which disrupts his mood. Close up shot puts emphasis on his emotion. Immediately, the sound of mobile notification can be heard. The shot shifts to mid-long, as the guy takes out his phone and sees whose message it is. POV shot will show the phone from the guys perspective, him getting a text from a beloved whom he had been texting since a long time and not getting a reply. Extreme close up shows his face, facial expression changing from annoyance and frustration to signs of happiness. Starting montage ends, the music starts.
The track starts with the beat and at that point a wide shot of the artist standing in an indoor setting is shown. The camera moves towards the artist (follow in with the camera) till the frame gets tighter and a close up is shown of him smiling widely. The lyrics start from here (0.13 seconds);  “Hum to Udd gaye jab tum jhuke, tabsay tum nazar men aa rukay“. On these lines the artist is playing the instrument which will be in sync with the beat, closeups as well as long shots are shown of him. After this another montage of clips will start from the lyrics, ‘Hum toh ho gaye zaman,Dheere dheere maala maal, Ab toh hona hai wohi jo banaye jahan, Hum toh ho gaye zaman,Dheere dheere maala maal, Ab toh hona hai wohi jo banaye jahan’. The next clip is a mid shot of a little boy selling roses to a guy in his car standing at the traffic signal, next is the mid closeup of the guy buying the whole bouquet just to bring a huge smile on the kid’s face; next shot is a closeup of the boy smiling genuinely. The montage proceeds with a girl dancing in front of a mirror, over the shoulder shot of this will be shown here.  Then a closeup of a woman enjoying the smell of freshly washed clothes, next, again. are closeups first of a dessert and the next of a person indulging in it.

The pre chorus begins at ‘Hum toh udd gaye udd gaye udd gaye’ here, a long slow motioned shot will be added of kids enjoying their ride on a flying chair at an amusement park. The chorus, that is the beat drop, will include performance of the artist dancing (long shots).
Proceeding with the video from the lyrics, ‘Aisi ajnabi thi aapse, Ki hum se na kabhi koi aa phasi,’ a long shot of a boy holding several shopping bags will be shown; . The lyrics continue, ‘Hum toh ho gaye zaman, Dheere dheere maala maal, Ab toh hona hai, wohi jo banaye jahan, Hum toh ho gaye zaman, Dheere dheere maala maal, Ab toh hona hai wohi jo banaye jahan,’ there is a change in the beat, it becomes a little fast and upbeat than before so there will be a sudden cut to a low angle shot showing hands throwing colour powder into the air symbolising a colour fight. Colours will play a huge role in connoting the emotion; happiness. Then a mid long shot of a group of friends having food in a cozy setting while watching Netflix; a full shot of a young child playing with his/her pet; full shot of kids playing on swings in a park; mid long shot of a girl finding forgotten money from jeans.

The pre chorus ‘Hum tou Udd Gaye, Udd Gaye, Udd Gaye‘ will show a long shot of a group of kids letting go of their helium balloons up to the sky the camera will tilt upwards to show this. The chorus again will show full shots of the artist.
The clips will continue again with a mid closeup of two teenage friends smoking up for the first time; a full shot of a cute little birthday surprise by family at 12 AM; , video shot from a side angle. The beats will again have a performance of the artist dancing at the studio like nobody is watching him. This performance will go on for almost 30 seconds.
As the video comes to an end and the beat changes from upbeat to slow, extreme close up shots of different people in the clips will be shown in a tight frame, people smiling widely, to further put emphasis on the emotion:  happiness.

Synopsis for our video

Now that we have chosen our final concept its time to summarise our whole idea of the music video into words. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the class for the synopsis but my group remarkably wrote in our previous class after after a long discussion with our Sir.
ea1a7cca-8402-4f8e-b72c-0f976c4e7440
The music video will start with a montage with no music in the background. The sun rises and a shot shows pigeons flying, indicating the start of the day. Norms of the day will be shown; a girl waking up; cleaner mopping the road pavement, a guy sitting at the bus stop. As the montage proceeds a bird poop falls on the shoulder of the guy sitting at the bus stop waiting for his bus. This frustrates him. Right after this moment, the guy’s phone rings, he takes it out of his pocket, annoyed. The message that he gets is a message from a beloved person of his whom he had been texting since a long time and not getting a reply back. This brings a smile on his face and changes his emotion from frustration and annoyance to signs of happiness. With this, comes the end of the montage.
The song starts now with small clips of the little things which becomes a source of happiness to an individual. Around 20 to 25 different clips will be added. Clips will include a girl dancing in front of a mirror, a woman enjoying the smell of freshly washed clothes, a person indluging with his/ her favourite dessert, going for shopping ( holding shopping bags), listening to music, having food in a cosy setting while watching Netlfix with friends, playing with pets, little kids selling roses to you on the street, taking pictures, kids playing on swings, finding forgotten money from your jeans etc etc. As the video comes to an end,  close up shots of all the different people in the clips will be shown.
